Usually learning about space and the solar system starts with stating the eight planets and knowing about their order according to which is the closest and which is the farthest from the sun.

The solar system is made up of all the planets that orbit the sun, but the solar system also has moons, comets, asteroids, minor planets, dust and gas; everything in the solar system actually orbits or revolves around the sun. The sun contains around 98% of all the material in the solar system.
There are only eight because in 2006, scientists considered Pluto a dwarf planet and thus they are now considered eight only. These planets with their order according to which is the closest to the sun are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
There is one good method we have came up with to give the kids the chance to remember the right order of the planets, which is this sentence "My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming" and this is helpful because the initials of the words will tell the kids which planet is the closest to the sun and which is the farthest away.
Scientists actually discovered other objects orbiting the sun which include comets, asteroids and dwarf planets, like Pluto and Eris, and Pluto was considered the ninth planet in the solar system before being renamed to a dwarf planet.
There are some facts about the solar system that would surprise the kids, one of them is the fact that the sun is not a planet but it is actually a star. The sun is like the stars that we know about and spot in the night sky, but it is actually the only star coming up in the day time to light it all up as we see it. The sun is so big, but did you know that you could fit more than one million Earths inside of it?
Starting with the closest planet to the sun, Mercury, there are some facts which we should know about. First of all, Mercury is the smallest planet and it is actually a small rocky planet, not like the moon. Mercury is covered with craters and scientists think that there might be volcanic activity on the planet. The second close planet to the sun is Venus. Venus is actually the sixth largest of all the planets, it is a small, rocky planet blanketed in a thick layer of yellowish clouds, these clouds are formed from a poison called sulfuric acid. The surface of Venus is very hot, about 400 degrees! and it also has no moons!
Earth is the third planet away from the sun and it is the fifth largest one. Earth is a small rocky planet which supports a lot of life and it is actually a unique planet when compared to all the others. 71% of the Earth's water is covered with water and it is orbited by one moon.
Mars is the next planet on the list and this planet is a small rocky planet which is cold and lifeless. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and it has no water and it has two tiny moons which orbit very close to the surface, their names are Phobos and Deimos.
Jupiter is a giant gas planet that is made up of about 90% hydrogen and 10% helium. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun but it is actually the largest planet. Coming up to the sixth planet rotating around the sun, Saturn will be mentioned. Saturn is a giant gas planet that is made of about 75% hydrogen and 25% helium. Saturn is mostly known to be famous for the thousands of beautiful rings. Saturn has more moons than any other planet, it actually has 18 known moons.
